Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

What is Machine Translation (MT)?

Machine translation (MT) is the fully automatic rendering of digitally stored text from one original language into one or more translated languages. This automatic rendering is done using a special software program that substitutes words, phrases, and sentences from one language into another language according to algorithms. These algorithms are either rule-based, statistical, or a hybrid of both.

MT can be divided into categories: generic MT and customized MT. Generic MT is what online services such as Google and Microsoft offer, and customized MT is carried out using a custom-trained MT engine, which typically resides on a local network and is either based on open-source or paid software. The custom engine can be trained on domain-specific data that has a major impact on the quality of the raw machine-translated output.
